Changzhou and Bolivarian Universities jointly build up Venezuela’s first Confucius Institute

On the morning of December 16, 2016, the first ever Confucius Institute in Venezuela jointly established by Changzhou University and Bolivarian University of Venezuela (UBV) was officially opened. Zhao Bentang, the Chinese ambassador to Venezuela, said the establishment of the Confucius Institute opened a new page for the cultural and educational exchanges and cooperation between China and Venezuela, and enabled more Venezuelan people to directly experience the Chinese culture.

At 9:00 am, January 21, 2017, the Confucius Institute officially started classes at UBV and ushered in the first batch of students. In six months since its commencement, the Confucius Institute has organized a series of programs themed; “I am a student of Confucius Institute” and “Approaching Asian Giant Seminar”. The Institute also opened “Chinese Training Courses for Venezuelan Public Servants” and held the final examinations for the first semester at the end of May.

The UBV Confucius Institute ) has 48 trainees in the first session of public servant Chinese training course, who come from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Planning, Ministry of Industry and Economic and Social Development Bank of Venezuela. During the 18-week program, trainees have a class once a week and can apply for the Chinese language proficiency examination organized by Hanban, the headquarter office of Chinese language council international in Beijing, China. The successful opening of the UBV Confucius Institute has seen an upsurge of Chinese language learning in Venezuela.

Pu Yuzhong, Party Secretary of the CPC Changzhou University Committee, said that Changzhou University is very strong in petroleum and petrochemical engineering disciplines and has in recent years set up language studies including the Spanish language program. Established 38 years ago, the University has made satisfactory achievements in teaching, scientific research, and international cultural exchange and cooperation. The Confucius Institute established by Changzhou University is the first of its kind in Venezuela. The Institute will focus on teaching the Chinese language and spreading the Chinese culture, and at the same time integrating the research strength of UBV and Changzhou University to engage in scientific research and production-university-research cooperation in the Chinese language, petroleum and petrochemical engineering, energy and chemical engineering as well as international trade to enhance exchanges and fusion between China and Venezuela in the fields of education, culture, economy and trade.

Shen Jufen, the Chinese Director of UBV Confucius Institute, said the 2nd round of Chinese course registration started on May 15. The Institute will try as much as possible to publicize the enrollment information through various channels to ensure smooth processing of the new round of registration. Through negotiations, the Chinese courses at Confucius Institute have been officially included in the credit system of UBV. Students can therefore obtain official credits by taking the Chinese language as an elective course. The initial enrollment plan is to admit 120 UBV students in four classes. About 300 students from other groups will also be admitted.(编辑 包海霞)
